The historic Brinton House at 603 Center Street will be decked out for Christmas in all its Victorian splendor for A Yuletide Tour of the Brinton House on Dec 10, 2021 from 3 to 9 PM and again on Dec. 11, 2022 from 12 to 5 PM.
Capt. Joseph Brinton and his wife Lydia will greet guests in the front parlor. Artisans will have their wares for you to purchase that perfect gift or stocking stuffer. There will be no charge but donations will be accepted at the door. All donations will go to Rolling Thunder. Rolling Thunder®, Inc. is a non-profit organization with a mission to publicize the POW-MIA issue, to educate the public that many American Prisoners of War were left behind after all previous wars and to help correct the past and to protect future veterans from being left behind should they become Prisoners of War-Missing In Action. They are also committed to helping American Veterans from all wars. Some of the current projects for the organization of 88 chapters in 29 states include partnering with DAR and Wreaths Across America. Their goal this year is to place 1,650 holiday wreaths on Veterans graves with a total cost of $16,000. Rolling Thunder also has a street memorial program to remember veterans as well as a host of other projects.
Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, Captain Joseph B. Brinton had this Victorian Stick home built by carpenter Theodore McNeely. The back portion of the home is older than the front. A story and a half Cape Cod type home with a lattice porch was moved to the rear and incorporated it into the new house. Structural changes were made when the home was converted into a two-family dwelling in the 1930s, but it still bears a striking resemblance to the photograph which appeared in the Ashland Advertising Gazette in 1895. The Captain, his wife Lydia, and daughters Berta, Edna, Mary, and Florence came to Ashland in 1877 when the captain was hired as the station agent at the railroad. Mary wrote her memories of growing up in the home during the 1880s.
In March of 2006 the house began its transformation after contacting several Brinton descendants who sent interior and exterior pictures of the home. These photos proved helpful in restoring the structure back to a single family dwelling. Portraits of the Brintons once again grace the walls of the original family’s home. The restoration of this historic house has been an ongoing project. The tour offers people an opportunity to see the work in progress as the kitchen is opened back to its original 1850s size as well as repainting the exterior and refinishing woodwork inside.
Make a day of it in Ashland as you come visit the Brinton House. Trinity Lutheran Church, across the street from the Brinton House, will have their annual Christmas cantata at 5:30 PM on Saturday. (The church is gracious enough to allow parking, but please avoid parking there before 5:30 PM on Saturday unless you are attending the cantata.) We have a number of good restaurants in Ashland including Uniontown Brewing Company, Downtown Perk, The South Street Grille, Linders, A-town Tap, O´Bryan´s, Shanks Bar and Grill, and more. Downtown Ashland is at about a 95% occupancy. So, come out and shop local in the Nationally Registered Historic District of downtown Ashland, Ohio.
